Everything a referred patient asks us in the first week. If your question is not here, message your navigator through your portal or email getyouriron@femfoundation.org.
Enrolling
Who can enroll?
Anyone whose provider has sent them the enrollment link. If you found this page on your own and think you have low iron, ask your provider to refer you, or contact us and we will explain the route.
Why my date of birth?
It lets your navigator match your enrollment to the referral your provider sent, so nothing is lost between the two.
What do you need from me?
Your name, your date of birth and an email address. That is the whole form.
What happens right after I enroll?
You receive a confirmation that your iron navigation has begun, and a navigator opens your case the same business day.
Insurance and cost
Is this free?
Navigation is free. Treatment is covered by your insurance where possible, and by the Foundation where it is not.
Do I need to pay anything up front?
No.
What if my insurance says no?
That is what the service is for. Your navigator works the denial, and if it stands, the Foundation's direct treatment fund covers you.
Will anyone ask me to donate?
No. Giving is never a condition of your care, and your navigator will never raise it.
Treatment
Where does the infusion happen?
At a treatment center in South Florida, or through mobile treatment at some screening events. Your navigator confirms the location with you.
Is IV iron safe in pregnancy?
Published data across 2,971 infusions in pregnancy show no adverse event that affected a pregnancy. Your hematologist will talk this through with you.
How long does it take?
About an hour in the chair. From consult to infusion, nine days on average.
What about side effects?
Most people have none. The published reaction rate is 4.5%, almost all mild, and a clinician is present throughout.
Staying in touch
How will you contact me?
Through your patient portal, by text and by email. You will hear from us within 72 hours of enrolling, and at every stage after that.
What if I have not heard anything?
If 72 hours pass without contact, email getyouriron@femfoundation.org and a navigator will reply the same business day.
Can I call?
Please message us instead. Your navigator replies through your patient portal, or you can email getyouriron@femfoundation.org.
